EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
