Crew Member Shares Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in various fields.

The enterprise behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
